Located in the heart of Bishopston, The Workshop has been thoughtfully designed to offer a contemporary interpretation of the surrounding urban area. Nestled among traditional Victorian terraces and semi-detached homes, the new dwelling strikes a careful balance between old and new.
A modest, modern form has been paired with locally sourced Bristol stone, timber cladding, and clean, contemporary detailing, ensuring the building sits comfortably within the existing area.
Set on a sensitive end-of-terrace plot, the site is bordered by neighbouring properties to both sides and the rear. Privacy was a key design consideration. Rear-facing windows at first floor level were carefully positioned to minimise overlooking, achieved through the use of a timber slatted privacy screen to the bedroom, and by locating secondary spaces such as the staircase, bathroom, and ensuite along the rear elevation. To bring in natural light while maintaining privacy, generous rooflights have been introduced, allowing daylight to pour into the first floor.
The home is being constructed from a highly insulated timber frame, prefabricated off-site to reduce waste and build time. This sustainable approach is further enhanced by a large solar array and an air source heat pump, delivering an energy-efficient home that exceeds both Building Regulations and Bristol City Council’s new build energy performance standards.
Construction is now underway, with completion expected by the end of 2025
